Frenship High School Teacher Announced as Recipient for Excellence in Teaching Award

Earlier this school year, five exceptional educators from across Lubbock County were nominated by their districts as Lubbock Christian University’s Distinguished Educators. Representing Frenship ISD among this year’s honorees was James Holloway, a longtime teacher at Frenship High School.

On Tuesday, Holloway was honored alongside fellow nominees at the annual LCU Distinguished Educators Banquet, where he was also named the overall secondary winner for the LCU Award for Excellence in Teaching. This marks the third consecutive year a Frenship educator has received this honor. As part of the recognition, Holloway received a $1,000 award and an engraved brass teacher handbell.

The LCU Award for Excellence in Teaching is presented annually to remarkable educators for their diligent efforts in educating tomorrow's generations and as an encouragement for the tangible impact they make through the long hours and dedicated commitment to their students.

Greg Hernandez, Frenship High School principal, praised Holloway for his dedication to students and innovation in the classroom.

“James Holloway has made a remarkable impact during his 12-year tenure at Frenship High School,” said Hernandez. “His energetic teaching approach makes physics, chemistry, and engineering accessible to all students. As sponsor of the award-winning Fe Tigers Robotics Team, he fosters innovation and collaboration among participants. His leadership of the Tiger Tech Champions Squad has successfully encouraged fellow teachers to incorporate technology into their classrooms. Mr. Holloway's unwavering commitment to student achievement and professional collaboration demonstrates teaching excellence.”

Holloway shares that he is honored not only to be recognized as Frenship’s Distinguished Educator, but as a recipient of the LCU Award for Excellence in Teaching.

“To be recognized by LCU and being nominated by Frenship ISD means a great deal professionally, of course, but also personally,” said Holloway. “It's a strong affirmation that the energy and passion I put into this work truly make an impact. It fuels the fire to keep going and continue serving our students and district the best way I can."

Holloway expressed his gratitude for being recognized, calling it a meaningful acknowledgment of the hard work educators put into shaping future innovators.

“Teachers pour a lot into their work every single day. It's demanding, rewarding work, but you don't often stop to think about external recognition. Receiving this award from Lubbock Christian University feels like a powerful validation. It acknowledges the challenges and successes of preparing students for technical fields. It’s not just about the curriculum; it's about sparking that interest, building those skills, and seeing them grow as innovators and problem solvers. It also highlights my passion to help, learn, and grow with my colleagues.”

After earning a bachelor’s degree in biology at Lubbock Christian University, Holloway attended Texas Tech University to receive a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. He began his teaching career teaching biology at Levelland High School. He taught physics, chemistry, environmental science, and forensic science at Estacado High School. Holloway became a Frenship Tiger in 2012. Since then, he has taken the engineering and robotics department to new heights with his innovative classroom style and inspiring leadership.

Holloway shared that his passion for teaching was shaped by the exceptional educators who influenced him throughout his academic journey and beyond.

"My path to becoming an educator was heavily influenced by the teachers who guided me during my science studies and into adulthood,” said Holloway. “Many of my most valued mentors and colleagues throughout my own growth were educators. Transitioning from a previous career fraught with negativity, I was determined to find work that fostered positivity. Education seemed the natural fit, a role where I could actively contribute to positive outcomes over the last 18 years."

Holloway’s recognition with the LCU Award for Excellence in Teaching is a testament to his lasting impact on both students and fellow educators. Through his passion, innovation, and commitment to creating a positive learning environment, he continues to shape not only the future of STEM education at Frenship High School, but the futures of the students he inspires every day.

Congratulations, James Holloway! Frenship is proud to have you as an educator!
